When and where is the SOMA Summer program?

SOMA Summer will take place from July 2 – August 23, 2018.

SOMA is centrally located in the residential neighborhood of San Pedro de Los Pinos within close proximity to the neighborhoods of Roma and Condesa in Mexico City. Our location is very accessible and one block away from the San Pedro de Los Pinos subway station. Program activities will take place at SOMA and throughout the city.

When do I need to submit my application and materials?

Please submit all materials by February 5, 2018.
 

How does the admissions process work?

A selection committee will review your application. The selection committee is formed by three members of SOMA’s artists’ council; including Carla Herrera-Prats. The other two members of the selection committee rotate every year. Accepted applicants will be notified by April.

 

Who should apply?

Applicants must demonstrate significant experience in their field. Many of our applicants have completed or are in the process of completing their MFA/MA. But artists who are not enrolled in academic institutions, or who don't hold a degree, are welcome to apply. Accepted candidates are expected to participate in all program activities.

How much is tuition and does it cover housing and travel costs?

Tuition is $3,800 USD for the eight-week program, which does not include accommodations, per diem or transportation.
Tuition can be paid in three installments:
$500 due May 1, 2015 (non-refundable)
$1,650 due June 4, 2015
$1,650 due July 9, 2015

What’s a reasonable budget for housing, food, transportation and recreation during the 8-weeks? $2,500 USD is a reasonable approximate budget for the eight-week stay in Mexico City. This budget should allow you to cover housing, food, recreation and transportation. A total of $6,300 USD is a reasonable budget covering ALL expenses.

How will I find housing?

Participants find their own temporary housing. We will assist you with finding accommodations by providing you with contact information of several friends of SOMA with sublets/rentals available during your stay in Mexico City.
In addition, we have agreements with a couple of hostels. This process begins upon acceptance into the program, and has always been completed before the program start, without any problems.
Sublets will range from $600 to $1000 per 8 weeks.

Can I apply for Financial Aid?

We are a small organization and, unfortunately, can't provide full-tuition grants for SOMA Summer participants. Financial support is available based on portfolio review and proof of financial need.
This financial aid is usually granted in exchange of support in the logistics of the program such as communication (internal and through social media), documentation (photo and video), and overall logistics (coordination with the group for visits and different activities, support with closing event).

If you apply for financial aid, provide a short statement indicating your interests and experience with these activities. If you are enrolled, we recommend that you contact your university to find out if grant funds or travel stipends are available. We also recommend applying for research abroad and/or travel grants from cultural councils and other foundations.

If necessary, we are happy to provide an acceptance letter for your application. If you are unfamiliar with available funding in your native country, please let us know and we might be able to assist you in your research.

What will the 2017 Program be like?

Activities will be led by guest artists, curators, and art-historians interested and involved in artistic sustainable projects in Mexico City such as: La Casa del Hijo del Ahuizote, Cráter Invertido, Biquini Wax, Obrera Centro, as well as projects involved with communities in Teotihuacán, Texcoco, and Xochimilco.

Guests also present their work in an evening series open to the public scheduled weekly on Wednesdays (Miércoles de SOMA). Visits to the studios of local artists take place every Thursday, as well as, individual critiques with artists and curators. Through these meetings (50 minutes each), participants have the opportunity to revisit their own practice. Participants choose the person to meet with through a lottery system.

An open to the public Closing Event, self-organized by participants, will culminate the program.

What are the facilities at SOMA? Where do participants produce their work?

Throughout the program you will have access to SOMA facilities, where you will share studio space with the rest of the international participants and where you will be able to develop your work. Please bear in mind there is no photo, printing, video or sculpture facilities at SOMA. However, we will assist you, as much as possible, in your needs to develop your work. Art production in Mexico City is overall quite affordable, and we will provide you a list of local fabricators that local artists in Mexico work with.
